Have you been An Optimist Or A Pessimist?
Are you currently An Optimist Or A Pessimist?
May be the glass half full or half empty? Will this product, policy, strategy work or fail? Can one really achieve my dreams or shall we be held surviving in fantasy-land?
These and countless other questions are asked every day by well meaning and difficult employees.
Lionel Tiger in his great book, Optimism, the Biology of Hope, written over 40 years ago discusses how optimism impacts someone's attitudes, outlook, success and health. He implies that those people who are less optimistic about life, the present as well as the future tend to withdraw with greater regularity and quite often die sooner. Within the book, Learned Optimism by Segleman, he discusses how everyone begins every project, activity, task, relationship, career etc. with either a YES or perhaps a NO or even a YES I can and I will or NO I can't and that i won't within their hearts.
You can not measure optimism. You can't bottle it, regulate it, run out of it or manufacture it but you can learn how to develop it for a moment just take the energy. Some people feel it is advisable to be realistic than optimistic - why set yourself up for disappointment? Let me know what exactly is realistic? In hindsight over the past A hundred years. Where would we be if: Edison, Bell, Gates, Ford, Land, Disney etall. were realistic? If their attitude had been, it hasn't been done yet therefore i guess it cannot be done!
There are many advantages to through an optimistic outlook. And simply as much pitfalls in not having one. Below are a few from the benefits.
You'll achieve more, you will have more fun. you will be happier, you'll have more friends, you'll take it easy more, you'll be healthier.
The pessimists on the planet will laugh, smile or perhaps gloat whenever your optimism appears to offer you no real obvious benefits. But it's impossible to determine the hidden payback that won't be evident to society but is a known in your mind and heart.
If you're wondering, questioning or challenging my thinking here I'll give you an idea. Should i be positive and optimistic about something that i'm wrong, what have I lost. In case you are negative or pessimistic about something and you're simply right whoever else gained?
In the long run it truly isn't about whether i was wrong or right, negative or positive or optimistic or pessimistic. The thing that means something is did we live a peaceful, happy and contented life with whatever views we held.
